The direct answer

Sometimes. If the drywall is dry within a few days and the water was clean, it may be able to be dried and repaired. The longer drywall stays wet, or if it is exposed to contaminated water, the more likely it will need to be removed and replaced. A technician can measure the moisture content and give you a factual answer.

01

When drywall can be dried and kept

Drywall that is wetted by clean, Category 1 water and dried within a few days can sometimes be saved. The gypsum core can be dried back to a safe moisture level, and the paper surfaces can be repaired and repainted. The technician's moisture meter decides, not the surface appearance.

Small, contained wet areas, such as a patch of ceiling below a fixed leak, are the best candidates for drying and repair. The faster the drying starts, the better the odds.

02

When drywall has to come out

Drywall that stays wet for a longer period, or that is exposed to contaminated water, is usually removed and replaced. Contaminated water soaks into the paper and gypsum and cannot be sanitized reliably, and prolonged moisture invites microbial growth inside the wall cavity.

Drywall is also removed when the water has wicked up from the floor, because the saturated lower section loses its structural integrity and the cavity behind it needs to be inspected and dried.

03

How technicians decide

The decision is based on measurements, not guesses. The technician takes moisture readings in the drywall and the framing behind it, checks how high the water wicked up the wall, and considers the water category and how long the material stayed wet.

If the drywall can be saved, the crew dries it as part of the structural drying job and verifies the moisture level before repair work begins. If it cannot, the removal is documented for insurance and the cavity is dried before replacement.
